Flowers are Medicine
I love all the ways that flowers nourish us; bringing joy, improving our moods and calming our nervous systems (because I’m a nerd, here’s a neat study on flowers’ positive physiological and psychological effects. )
Many of flowers we admire for their beauty also have powerful medicinal properties. This week’s bouquets feature yarrow and feverfew, both having a long history of medicinal and even magical uses.
Yarrow, with it’s delicate, lacy leaves and cheerful clusters of tiny multi-colored blooms, has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb, known to help with everything from wound healing to digestion. It’s also a magnet for pollinators and beneficial insects, making it a hardworking addition to both your bouquet and the ecosystem. In the language of flowers, Yarrow often symbolizes healing and everlasting love.
It looks gorgeous alongside feverfew, sporting tiny pale yellow daisy-like flowers. Feverfew is another powerful medicinal, traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. It holds a special place in my heart, as years ago I used feverfew to help cure intense migraines (that never came back again!)
